Between 1750 to 1860, the wealthy landlords in Scotland decided to evict tenant farmers to make more income grazing sheep on the land. This became know as the Highland Clearances. Many Scottish settlers immigrated to Canada during this period.

In the 18th century, Thomas Douglas, fifth Earl of Selkirk, became the unexpected support for displaced families who were evicted from their homes in Scotland during the period known as "The Highland Clearances."
